Checklist - Ph.D. in Microbiology
  1. End of first year
    1. ____ Choose an Advisor and Advisory Committee
    2. ____ File a Plan of study with the Graduate School
  2. End of second year
    1. ____ Prepare for and take the preliminary examination normally offered in January.
  3. End of third year
    1. ____ Present the related proposal
  4. Final requirements
    1. ____ Complete foreign language requirement
    2. ____ A working copy of the dissertation must be submitted to the Graduate Records Office at least seven days before the oral defense. This copy must be accompanied by a tentative-approval form signed by all advisory committee members who should be given sufficient time to review the dissertation. Guidelines for preparation of the dissertation are available from the Graduate School and should be adhered to strictly.
    3. ____ A public oral defense of the dissertation must be presented with all members of the advisory committee present. All faculty and students are invited to attend.
    4. ____ Following the defense, two final, revised copies of the dissertation are filed with the Graduate Records Office along with final approval pages signed by the advisory committee members.
